SHERIFF: DELTONA COUPLE SHOT THEMSELVES IN FAKE HOME INVASION
  Article Posted On: (03/26/2018)

A Deltona husband and wife’s story that they were shot during a home invasion was suspicious from the beginning and it fell apart when detectives learned the man and woman actually shot themselves with hopes of fraudulently collecting insurance money, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. Lindsey Pelton, 36, has a criminal history that shows fraud, scheming and scamming is her forte. And the staged home invasion was to be no different: an elaborate scheme to defraud, Chitwood said. Except it didn’t work. Instead of looking forward to a payday, Doug Teixeira, 35, and his wife, Lindsey, were locked up Tuesday for reporting a false crime, Chitwood said.

Teixeira was charged with tampering with physical evidence and giving false information to law enforcement officers investigating a felony. He was being held Tuesday on $3,500 bail. Pelton is being held on Tuesday $1,000. The couple initially told Volusia County sheriff’s deputies that two men entered their home on Hayward Avenue through a back sliding glass door shortly after 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26. After a brief exchange with the suspects, the husband was shot in the leg and the wife was shot in the arm, according to the Sheriff’s Office. They even had deputies searching for suspects they invented, which they said fled in an unknown vehicle, authorities said. But deputies quickly suspected that something was not right as the home smelled of bleach and they found dried blood in the home and garage. “If this incident just occurred and they called police right away, why would you have dried blood and why do we have bleach all over the house,” Chitwood said. Chitwood said Pelton shot herself in the lower left forearm and fractured the bone and Teixeira had a bullet enter the rear of his left calf and exit the front of the calf, reports state.

Both were transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital by ambulance and suffered injuries not considered life-threatening. “They shot themselves for the purpose of committing insurance fraud,” Chitwood said. “They were going to sue the homeowner to collect money.” Chitwood said the couple even had retained an attorney for the insurance proceedings. “Their story was that two guys entered the house and one shot her in the arm and when he came out he was shot in the leg but we were able to determine no one broke into their home,” Chitwood said. Chitwood said one of the inconsistencies in their story was that they paid rent but when Pelton’s father, Carson Tyler, called deputies to get information, he told detectives he paid the rent and for everything else because he took care of them. When deputies told Carson that $7,000 was taken from a safe by the robbers, the father said neither his daughter or her husband had nothing to get robbed of or get shot over, reports state. “Carson stated neither Lindsey or Doug ‘have two pennies to rub together,’ ” investigators wrote in their report. “Carson said he knew his daughter and she had probably ‘never seen $7,000 in her life.’ ”
